Options To Improve The Look Of Crooked Teeth

Posted on

Your teeth play a significant role in your appearance. People who have teeth that they feel are less-than-attractive may suffer from poor self-esteem and decreased confidence. However, many cosmetic dental issues, such as crooked teeth, can be easily corrected nowadays. If you suffer from misaligned teeth that detract from your appearance, here are a few options that may be suitable for you:

Porcelain Veneers

Dental veneers do not actually correct a dental misalignment, but they can help your teeth appear straighter. Veneers are so thin that they only require a minute amount of tooth material to be removed before they are applied to the front surface of your teeth. Some modern veneers do not even require the removal of any enamel. Once the veneers are in place, they can cover multiple imperfections, including discoloration, gaps, irregular sizing and minor misalignments.

If enamel is removed prior to the placement of a veneer, the appliance is permanent. However, veneers that do not require enamel removal can be kept in place indefinitely or removed if you change your mind later.

Braces

Braces are a popular method of repositioning the teeth. They include brackets that are affixed to the teeth. However, the brackets alone do not move the teeth. An archwire is attached to the braces using elastic bands that hold the wire in place. When your dentist adjusts the archwire, it places pressure on the teeth to move them into the desired positions. Multiple archwire adjustments can be expected throughout your treatment process.

Some braces include self-ligating brackets, which move the teeth quicker and more comfortably. The brackets do not require bands to connect the archwire. Instead, the wire is fed through tiny holes within the brackets.

In addition to braces with self-ligating brackets, braces that appear clear in the mouth are also available. There are even braces that are designed to be applied to the back side of the teeth for discreet alignment.

Clear Aligners

Clear aligners can also be used to achieve a straight smile. The aligners are actually plastic trays that progressively apply force to the teeth to cause them to shift. Multiple sets of trays are used during the treatment. Each set is worn for a couple of weeks before the wearer progresses to the next set.

Aligning trays work well for teens and adults who have moderate alignment issues.
